Fascia & Soffit Installation

What is Fascia?

Fascia Boards are often made from a wide range of different materials, each

posing various advantages and challenges.

The most common materials include wood, PVC,

fiber cement, vinyl, and aluminum. Wood: Wood is perhaps the most common selection when

it comes to designing a fascia board.

Gerald’s words or definition is......

Fascia is typically a 1x6 treated or untreated board that is installed directly onto the rafter tails of the roof directly below the shingles. It is the entrance to

the roof as far as moisture is concerned and should be painted for weather protection or covered with vinyl or aluminum metal.

How does Fascia Work?

Some Customers choose to install Hardie board as fascia. This is not sturdy enough material to attach a 6-inch seamless gutter to. In most cases the gutter will pull away from the home and detach from the home. It is commonly recommended for Fascia to use a 1x6 treated board that is painted for protection from the elements.

The same can be said for Soffit. Usually Plywood is used either 1⁄4, 1⁄2, or 3⁄4 inches thick.

What is Soffit? Types of soffit materials

• Wooden soffit. A wooden soffit emphasizes the natural character of a building and looks

noble. ...

• PVC soffit. A PVC soffit is resistant to weather conditions, requires no maintenance, is

resistant to corrosion, mold and fungi. ...

• Metal soffit. ...

• Aluminum soffit. ...

• Wood-based soffit.

Gerald’s Words or Definition is...soffit is typically plywood 1⁄4, 1⁄2, or 3⁄4 thick. Directly installed

below the fascia board. Customers typically choose to install vinyl covering to protect the wood

from moisture from the elements.

What is the function of Soffit?

Having Soffit is not required in a home, but it does keep animals

from having access to or entry into your home through the roof. Which could in turn cause a lot

of issues inside the home. It also adds an extra layer of protection for the rafter tails in the roof

of the home.

What are the Common Issues that Occur with Soffit and Fascia?

Common Issues that occur with Fascia is Wood Rot from the moisture in the elements such as rain, snow, heat. This can allow animals to enter into the home through these weakened areas. Painting a Fascia Board, or Soffit Board protects them from erosion and corrosion. Also covering them with Vinyl and Aluminum Metal adds an extra layer of protection. Also installing drip edge can protect water from coming off of the shingles and curling backwards directly in the builders gap of the roof which is

considered the spot between the top of the fascia and bottom of the shingles. This extends the

life of Fascia and Soffit.

What is the average cost of Soffit and Fascia?

Replacing your soffit generally costs about $20 to

$30 a linear foot installed, while replacing your fascia costs about $15 to $25 a linear foot

installed. Prices for the project depend on a number of factors, including the materials used and

the size of your house.
